August 2023 Movie Releases

August’s movie releases included Latinos as a superhero beetle, a superhero turtle, toymaker, son of a U.S. president and teen wanting to get in his first fight. There were more than a dozen movies released in August 2023 with Latino and Hispanic talent featured on camera and behind-the-scenes. Movies are listed by release date.

Stronghold (Aug. 1)

Brazilian and Cuban American actress Bianca Santos stars in the post-apocolyptic thriller about a woman and her mom surviving in the woods when a stranger arrives and puts their lives in jeopardy. Also stars Mexican actor Oliver Rayón and Brazilian filmmaker Julia Camara directs. (Thriller)

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem (Aug. 2)

Mexican American actor Nicolas Cantu voices Leonardo “Leo” who carries a katana, wears a blue mask and is the leader of the superhero turtles in the latest TMNT franchise film. Cuban American Dan Hernandez co-wrote the script. (Animated, Superhero)

Meg 2: The Trench (Aug. 4)

Spanish actor Sergio Peris-Mencheta as Montes, a mercenary in charge of illegal mining operation. This sequel follows a research team on an exploratory dive into the deepest depths of the ocean. Their voyage spirals into chaos when a mining operation forces them into a battle for survival between mercenaries and the megalodons. (Sci-Fi, Action)

Til Death Do Us Part (Aug. 4)

Chilean Actor Pancho Moler stars in this indie flick as a groomsman 7. In this indie flick, a former bride-to-be who bailed on her wedding must fight off her ex-groom and seven angry killer groomsmen in order to survive the night.(Horror)

What Comes Around (Aug. 4)

Spanish and Mexican American actor Jesse Garcia stars in this indie movie about a young woman caught in a cat and mouse game after an online love affair with an older man. (Thriller)

Promblemista (Aug. 4 )

Salvadorean writer and actor Julio Torres  stars as in this surrealist indie flick as Alejandro, an aspiring toy designer from El Salvador struggling to bring his unusual ideas to life in New York City. Torres also directs the movie. Chilean actress Catalina Saavedra is part of the cast.(Comedy)

Summoning the Spirit (Aug. 8)

The indie horror film is directed  and co-written by Jon Garcia. It stars Cuban American actress Millie Valdes and Colombian actor Ernesto Reyes as a couple who purchases an home in a forest to escape the bustle of a big city only to realize their new home is on the land of a cult. And, the cult is obsessed with a Big Foot-like monster. (Horror)

Red, White & Royal Blue (Aug. 11)

Puerto Rican Matthew Lopez directs this movie adaption of the best-selling book. Taylor Zakhar Perez, who is of Mexican descent, plays the son of the U.S. president who creates a media crisis after offending a British prince. Hispanic actors Clifton Collins, Jr., Juan Castaño and Sarah Shahi appear. (Romance, LGBTQIA+).

Inside Man (Aug. 11)

Stars Jack Cannavale, who is of Cuban descent. Film is about a police detective who tries to redeem himself by going undercover to take down a mob boss. (Thriller, Crime)

The Eternal Memory (Aug. 11)

This documentary follows the life of famous Chilean journalist Augusto Góngora and his wife as he tries to hold on to his memories after an Alzheimer’s diagnosis.(Documentary)

Miguel Wants to Fight (Aug. 16)

Puerto Rican actor Tyler Dean Flores stars as the titular Miguel, a teenage boy who asks his friends to help him get into his first fight before he moves to a new city. The film also stars Dascha Polanco, Raúl Castillo and Andrea Navedo. Directed by Oz Rodriguez, who is Dominican. Film was co-written by Shea Serrano, who is Mexican American. (Comedy, Coming of age)

Strays (Aug. 18)

Colombian actress Sofía Vergara and Mexican American actor Harvey Guillén star in this movie about an abandoned dog who teams up with stray dogs to get revenge on his former owner. ( Comedy)

Blue Beetle (Aug. 18 )

DC’s first-ever Latino-led, live action superhero action movie is directed by Puerto Rican Angel Manuel Soto. Xolo Maridueña stars as Jaime Reyes, who becomes the wielder of the blue beetle scarab that grants his extra strength and powers. The cast includes Harvey Guillén, Belissa Escobedo, Adriana Barraza, George Lopez, Raoul Trujillo, Damian Alcazar, Gareth Dunnet-Alcoce and Bruna Marquezine. (Action, Superhero)

Birth/Rebirth (Aug. 18)

A single mother played by Dominican American actress Judy Reyes and a childless morgue technician are bound together by their relationship to a little girl they have reanimated from the dead.  The film also stars Latinas Monique Curnen, who is of Puerto Rican descent, and Rina Mejia. (Horror)

Bad Things (Aug. 18)

For a group of friends a weekend getaway at a snowy resort turns into a nightmare as deceased guests return to life and the friends turn on each other to survive. Stars Rad Pereira, who is of Brazilian descent. (Horror)

Mutt (Aug. 18)

The film stars Lío Mehiel, who is a Puerto Rican and Greek trans actor, as Feña, a trans man in his 20s. Also stars Chilean actor Alejandro Goic. Over the course of a single hectic day in New York City, Feña must navigate the new dynamics of relationships with his foreign father and straight ex-boyfriend while tackling the day-to-day challenges that come with living a life in-between. (Drama, LGBTQIA+).

Landscape with an Invisible Hand (Aug. 18)

When two teenagers discover the alien occupiers of Earth are fascinated with human love and will pay for access to it, they decide to livestream their romance to make extra cash for their families. Clifton Collins, Jr. who is of Mexican descent is part of the cast. (Sci-Fi, Drama, Comedy)

The List (Aug. 22)

Puerto Rican actor Christian Navarro stars as the fiancé. In this movie, a woman finds out her fiancé slept with someone from his “free pass” list and she vows to get even by hooking up with her own free pass. (Romance, Comedy)

Aris Alvarado stars in this mockumentary about a film crew who stumbles across the mystery of missing infamous rap duo the Booty Boys. (Comedy)

Two girls start a fight club as a way to lose their virginities to cheerleaders. The film stars Ruby Cruz, who is of Mexican descent. (Comedy. LGBTQIA+)

You Are SO Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah! (Aug. 25)

BFFs Stacy and Lydia are both planning epic bat mitzvahs. But it all unravels when middle school drama threatens to ruin everything. Puerto Rican actor Luis Guzmán stars as one of the fathers of the dueling teens. Dean Scott Vazquez and Kasey Bella Suarez are also part of the cast. (Comedy)
